Many cupcakes...

There are no May birthdays in my family so May is usually a quiet month in my kitchen.  That is until last week - my kitchen was overflowing with cupcakes.  250 cupcakes were required for a demonstration of the "Art of Cooking" at my two sons school. In addition the 250 cupcakes - at least another 2 dozen were required for a display and then a few for samples...so in the end I baked about 280 chocolate cupcakes and a dozen vanilla just in case any of the kids didn't like/were allergic to chocolate.

To make this an easy demonstration I was going to teach 250 kids how to make a simple cupcake batter from scratch and then give them a few ideas on what you could do to decorate the cupcakes.  For my sous chefs I had my two 7 year olds - they knew exactly what to do as they regularly make cupcakes at home with me.

Firstly since I had 6-12 year olds in the group that was watching the demo I was surprised to find how few had ever had the chance to bake and how even less baked from scratch.  My guys did a great job with the batter...and then we decorated them to look like ice cream cones - soft serve and a "scoop" of ice cream using buttercream frosting and sprinkles, gummies, M&Ms and mini marshmallows!

All 250 kids got to come and assemble a cup cake and judging by the lack of noise coming from those eating their creations - I'm fairly certain that it all went down very well.

Looks like I may be going back next year to do something in the Art of Cooking - only trouble is my boys want me to work with the same age group again...and that means I would have to come up with something new and different as well as  just as fun to do!
